As a leader, you’re in a position very few people get to occupy. Think about it. You have resources at your disposal to be creative, make change, and bring your visions and values to life. And the fact that it’s you, sitting in that chair, at this moment in time? Impressive.
But here’s another impressive fact. If you’re like most leaders we’ve worked with, you don’t always feel empowered. In fact, a lot of the time you’re more likely to feel constrained, pressured, and frustrated. This is a major paradox of power: leaders at every level –from CEO to supervisor– are surprisingly quick to admit to their lack, not their surplus, of power. Executives feel hindered by the CEO’s management style. CEOs feel thwarted by the market, government regulation, or their Boards of Director. The Chief of Police feels mistreated in the media. The oldest child feels unfairly punished for fighting, when it was her younger sibling who started it.
Our research shows why: the role may have power, but the person in it doesn’t always feel it. This mismatch between the social power and personal power is one of the chief reasons leaders fail. The company Vice President doesn’t ask for help when he should because he’s terrified he’ll be seen as a fraud. The doctor hides behind her clipboard when entering the patient’s room because she’s socially shy. The father screams at his child because he’s exhausted and at his wit’s end. A teacher waves off the student’s question dismissively because he doesn’t know the answer. The boss fails to intervene in a staff conflict, because she’s conflict avoidant, and ends up losing key players.
Being a leader means you have a responsibility to lead with mindfulness and purpose, to infuse your role with personal power. On good days, you do this. But on bad days, when you get triggered, lose your footing, or find yourself thwarted, it’s easy to become reactive in your role, and victimized by the responsibilities and pressures you face.
That’s why it’s important to ask yourself these tough questions: are you using your power fully, in the way you want to, to create the worlds you want to create? Are you using this opportunity to do amazing things, to be creative, to make your team or company a great place to work, and to create exceptional social value?

For others, it’s a unique project, product or venture. In this way, the P2 Leaderlab is not just another leadership program. We’re not just going to give you concepts or tools to enhance your leadership abilities. Our focus is on you, on the worlds you want to create. Together, we create a process to help you manifest your vision, to unleash your full potential, and get to a different place in your leadership. Our job is to help you discover your unique vision, the roadblock that gets in its way, and to give you concrete tools and a road map to manifest it.
At the end of the nine month immersive and experiential program, you will be in a different place than you are now. You will have gotten traction on your P2 Project, and will know exactly what to do and what actions you need to take to get to where you want to be. You will leave the Leaderlab with a plan and practiced methodology for staying on track, working though the obstacles holding you back, and making the amazing happen.
